What is fatty liver disease?
In short, fatty liver disease is a common disease of the liver and most people do not show symptoms. An ultrasound of your liver is usually how they spot it.
Some cases, like alcohol abuse can cause the fatty liver to sustain damage often in the form of scarring. Extreme cases can lead to liver cirrhosis, that my friend is not a good thing. It is the end stage of that organ and is caused by scar tissue resulting from long term damage or systematic abuse.
There is a good thing about fatty liver disease, it can be reversed with tender love and care. Mainly diet change and lifestyle choices that favor healthy exercise.
Remember the liver is the only organ that can regenerate, that isn’t an excuse to abuse this wonderful organ.

Is there such thing as a liver shrinking diet?
Indeed, there is, it involves eating low-calorie, low-fat and low carb foods. This diet turns your body into a fat burning machine the end result being that the excess fat caused by the fatty liver disease is burned away in turn causing your liver to shrink.
I bet you are wondering what kind of food can you eat on this liver shrinking diet. Unsurprisingly it is largely fruits, vegetables and a select few nuts.
Dark leafy greens are one of the best things to feed your liver. These include spinach, collards, and kale. As a bonus they are also high in fiber and antioxidants. Spinach in particular is the best one of the bunch.
Fresh fruits such as grapefruit, berries and lemons are the most beneficial. Actually, citrus fruit in general is great for a liver shrinking diet.
Just about all types of vegetables encourage the liver to good health. The best ones being broccoli, carrots, and beets. You will want to avoid potatoes as they are high in carbs.
For nuts it is Brazil nuts and pecans being the best options.

What about drinks when using a liver shrinking diet?
You are definitely going to want to stay away from alcohol, it is not good for your liver and is high in calories. If anyone tries to convince you that there is a zero-calorie alcoholic beverage, please know this is a lie.
Drinks that are liver shrinking diet friendly are both unsweetened green tea and unsweetened coffee. Fruit juices are also high in calories and carbs so you will want to limit those.
Everyone’s favorite activity exercise!
Exercises that are strength or resistance training based, like pushups, are best. If you truly hate moving then great news, planking doesn’t involve much moving at all. Though it is harder than you think due to holding a singular position for a period of time.
You will want to exercise at a minimum of 30 minutes per week. Please feel free to do more just do not overdo it.
Knowing your limits and acknowledging them is healthy.
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with fatty liver disease, do not worry it is fixable. A liver shrinking diet will help pave the way for a healthier liver and lifestyle.

On a serious note, if you or a loved one is an alcoholic and have been drinking daily for a while, please I implore you, consult your family doctor for the safest way to quit drinking. Cold turkey can result in seizures or heart problems.
If you or a loved one wants to stop drinking there are many diverse types of support groups online or in meetings, such as the app Loosid and programs like AA. You can also contact me through email at [email protected]. Its best to reach out sooner rather than later before it is too late to reverse the damage. Quitting starts with just one day at a time.
